Introduction

Divisional Secretariat Bamunakotuwa, located in the Wariyapola electoral division in Kurunegala District of North Western Province. Wariyapola, Weerambugedara, Maspotha and Panduwasnuwara East Divisional Secretariats are located as the boundaries. Bamunakotuwa is rich with natural beauty with a mountain chain surrounded by the division. The ancient and archeological places along with some folklores are located in Bamunakotuwa. The total land area is 100.3 Square kilometers and total population is approximately thirty nine thousand four hundred and twenty nine.
The main livelihood is agriculture and people having a rich harvest in Yala and Maha agricultural seasons. The ninety eight tanks provide water to the paddy fields in the area. In addition to the paddy cultivation, coconut vegetables, fruits, various plants of pepper also cultivating by the considerable amount of people. Animal husbandry and cattle husbandry has become more in present. Home gardening also popular in the division
Bamunakotuwa division has eighteen main schools and one pirivena to provide education to the children. Apart from government officers, private sector employees and labours, others are suffering from unemployment. Coir, pottery, copra, bricks, garment and sweetmeat industries are taken priority in the economy of the division. Tourism industry also has a small place in the area.
The main religion in the area is Buddhism. There are 52 Buddhist temples in the division. Among them Nathagane Monastery has the main ancient and archeological value. In addition to the Buddhist temples there are one church and two Mosques in the division. Bamunakotuwa division is playing key role in the fields of drama, dancing and hand crafts. In the division there are three art galleries and one cultural center for improvement of artists.
Major problems to be faced by people of Bamunakotuwa division are water shortage, infrastructure problems (weakness of internal roads), poverty and unemployment. Gama Neguma, Maga Neguma and lots of other projects implementing from ministries are help to solve the main economic and social problems in the Bamunakotuwa Divisional Secretariat.
